Final Fantasy Resonance: A Nostalgic Journey Back to the Roots of Turn-Based RPGs (2026)

In an exclusive interview, the producers of Final Fantasy Resonance, Keisuke Nakashima and Hiroto Furuya, delve into the game's development, drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy V and VI for its turn-based combat system. The game, a collaboration between the two producers, was conceptualized around six to seven years ago, aiming to capture the classic Final Fantasy experience. Nakashima, who was inspired by the turn-based combat of Final Fantasy V, wanted to create a game that would allow players to explore and experience the classic fun of the series. Furuya, who grew up playing Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI, wanted to create a game that would respect the classics and deliver on the traditional Final Fantasy storyline and experience. The development timeline was shorter than the time it took to conceptualize the game, and the team aimed to create a console adaptation of the mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius. The story of Final Fantasy Resonance revolves around crystals, which are central to the game's narrative, and the father-child relationship, which is a key theme in Final Fantasy V. The game's combat system is a blend of different Final Fantasy systems, including the Job system from Final Fantasy V and the unique character traits from Final Fantasy VI. The producers aimed to create a system that would allow all characters to shine and provide a satisfying and intuitive experience. The resurgence of turn-based RPGs is attributed to the increased number of options for handheld hardware, such as the Nintendo Switch, and the movement towards revisiting and reimagining past projects. Nakashima and Furuya believe that there is still a future for turn-based RPGs, even in the modern gaming landscape, and that creators who grew up playing these games are now creating their own.
