Germany's Deutsche Bahn is stepping in to oversee the much-needed transformation of Hellenic Railways (OSE). This move comes as a response to the deteriorating state of the Greek railway system, which has been plagued by disrepair and safety concerns. With a contract worth up to €62 million (including VAT) and a duration of five years, with an option for an additional five years, Deutsche Bahn's role as technical manager is set to be a significant one.
The primary goal is to reorganize OSE, focusing on critical infrastructure management, supervision, safety improvements, and daily operations. The operation of the ETCS automatic braking system on the central axis also remains a major concern.
OSE CEO Christos Palios highlighted seven key operational areas that Deutsche Bahn will support: safety and operational control, network operation and traffic, infrastructure maintenance and management, projects, digital operations, human resources, and corporate governance. Palios emphasized that the contract does not replace OSE's management or transfer institutional responsibility but rather aims to transfer knowledge, establish modern procedures, and strengthen the organization's executives.
